the guiding principle has been, and will continue to be, to seek knowledge and beauty in books that have been tested by time. Exceptions are granted in areas of technical knowledge (e.g., physics, computer science) or, in the case of literature, when the recommendation comes from a trusted source (e.g., Kazuo Ishiguro).
So here it is for the new year:
- The Rambler (3 volumes), by Samuel Johnson | Yale University Press
- Argonautica, by Apollonius Rhodius | Biblioteca Clásica Gredos (Spanish)
- Republic, by Plato | Biblioteca Clásica Gredos (Spanish)
- The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci | Folio Society (there are three volumes, I want to read the first one this year)
- The Fabric of Reality, by David Deutsch (Richard Dawkins is a fan of Deutsch, so there's my trusted source)
- Read or re-read one of Nassim N. Taleb's books (Fooled by Randomness or Antifragile)
- The Aeneid, by Virgil | translated by Robert Fagles
- Dark Entries, stories by Robert Aickman | Tartarus Press
The listed books are in no particular order and with the understanding that life will get in the middle.
There will not be a checkmark next to every single item when December 2024 comes around.
